Remarks: "Burgermeister Ale. Circa: 1938 - 1939. This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists 2 Pats.- Others Pending and was filled by San Francisco Brewing Corporation, Formerly Milwaukee Brewery of San Francisco; San Francisco, California. Notice the significant changes to this package design. The California State permit number no longer appears on the package, and the trademark no longer appears within the text of the left side panel, but is now printed, along with the patent information, at the bottom of the right side panel. Note also, the brewery information has shifted to the bottom of the left side panel. The 1938 Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) regulation to separate the can manufacturing information from the brewery information led to this package design change. By this timeframe, sales of the ale brand were on the rise, so it is probable that the brewer was more willing to justify the added cost of ordering new can stock. This Grad 1- example is the best known to the author. Rarity Rating: R-4." Reprinted with permission from Kevin C. Lilek.
